James VanAllen Thomson
James and <private> Wedding – 1956

Stories

James’ kids were the first to be baptized in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church in Papillion, Nebraska.

James farmed his mother’s property on weekends while working at Western Electric as an electroplater.  He apparently wanted to buy a farm and return to farming as his career.  His wife was not fond of this idea.

As a farmer, James knew how to use guns.  He shot deer in an effort to protect the crops. He also shot coyotes, snakes, birds and other wild life.  James’ wife recounted to her youngest that James wanted to take him Kodiak bear hunting in Alaska some day.  James died when his youngest was six years old; thereby, they never had the chance to fulfill that goal.

When James died, his sister <private> was on a trip with her husband.  She had a knowing of his passing and had her husband turn around and head home because of her intuition.

James VanAllen Thomson, son of Alexander and Donna (VanAllen) Thomson, was born May 6th near Palmyra, Nebraska.

Marriage

On June 9, 1956, James married <private>, daughter of <private> and <private>.  James and <private> had three children:
  • <private> [m: <private>]
  • <private> [m: <private>, <private>]
  • <private> [m: <private>]

Death

James worked as an electroplater at the Western Electric in Omaha, Nebraska.  James struggled with his heart issues, complaining that he felt like he was going to die one day when running to his car during a rain storm.  James was ready for his heart surgery so he could feel better.

James’ surgery to repair a number of heart issues was scheduled for late June after the wedding of his sister-in-law Dorothy (Helm) Patz.  James survived the surgery.  He was not doing well and was administered morphine to address the pain.  He died a few days after his surgery on June 29th, dying at the young age of 32.  James left a wife and three young children.  He was also survived by his mother, Donna (VanAllen) Thomson, and his siblings.
