Selecting The Best Record
Which Record Is Best
There is no rules that you can apply in all cases. However, there are some guidelines to consider:
- Birth Records: Generally they are the best record for the birth date. The name of the child may not be listed or if listed, they may not use that name later in life. They are useful for sorting out children and parents, but remember that nicknames may be used and a mother’s maiden name may not be listed.
- Marriage Records: Generally, they are good for the names of the couple. They are sometimes a bit less reliable for parents, especially the mothers’ maiden names. Also, nicknames or middle names may be used on the record. Although ages are given, people often lie about their age. Also, be aware that just because there is a marriage license does not mean their was a marriage unless the record shows that the marriage was performed.
- Death Records: Names and death dates are generally accurate although nicknames have been known to be used. Birth dates, the parents names, and all location of birth should not be considered reliable unless substantiated by other records.
- Census Records: They are good, bad, and ugly. Sometimes they are consistent. Other times, a neighbor or child provided the information and it can be very wrong.
