Typically the bondsman was the brides brother, uncle, parent, or other relative. Was Leroy related to Jane? If so, how?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jane\u2019s document stating that she wishes to marry was signed by Thomas Marshall. It is unclear whether this was her father, Thomas Marshall who served as county clerk, or another Thomas Marshall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Transcription of Marriage Bond<\/h4>\n<p class=\"\">This is to certify that I wish to be &#8212;- the bounds of Matrimony unto Wm. Donaldson &#8212;&#8211; in witness unto .&#8212;- this fifth day of April 1813.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jane Marshall<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">(Thomas Marshall is written across the paper)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Know all &#8212;- presents that we William Donaldson and Leroy Griffin are held &amp; firmly &#8212;- the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the &#8212;- full sum of fifty pounds current money to which payment &#8212;- to be made. We bind ourselves our heirs firmly by these &#8212;- sealed with our seals and dated the 5th day of April 1813. &#8212;- of the above obligation is such that whereas a marriage is intended to be had &#8212;- between the said Wm Donaldson and Jane Marshall. One is Chief Justice John Marshall\u2019s brother, who served as county clerk and died there in 1817. The other one was a blacksmith and may or may not have been related to the family.<\/p>\n<p id=\"u71033-4\" class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Thomas Marshall (father of Chief Justice John Marshall died in Mason County, Kentucky. All the burials listed on Find-a-Grave for Marshall Cemetery, Old Washington, Mason, Kentucky, which is where Chief Justice John Marshall\u2019s father is buried, are certainly related. The men named Thomas Marshall in this cemetery do not appear to be Jane\u2019s father. The name \u201cThomas Marshall\u201d does not appear on Find-a-Grave for any other cemetery in Mason County, Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Land Records<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\">The following are land records related to the Marshall Family and Mason County, Kentucky.
