Joseph and Cynthia (Nicholson) Ellis

 

Joseph Lewis Ellis, son of David and Lucy (Storms) Ellis,  married Cynthia Ann Nicholson in 1857 and they had began a family soon after.   The family stayed in Ripley County at least until 1871 when Rose Isabel “Rosa,” our direct ancestor was born.

 

Moving West

The family then  moved west stopping for a brief time in Illinois, where Joseph’s mother and several siblings resided, before moving on to southeast Kansas.  Joseph’s mother Lucy and several of his siblings also made the move to Kansas. The family lived in Neosho County and Crawford County. 

 

The Children

Joseph and Cynthia’s children include:

  • Martha “Mattie” married Abraham Francis.  They lived near Galesburg, Kansas and raised four daughters.
  • George William (G.W.) married Ida Alice Herrin.  They raised their family near Butler, Kansas. George was said to be a harsh disciplinarian, but was said to be very gentle with his grandchildren.
  • Mary Jane married George Washington Plummer.  They raised their family in Western Kansas.
  • Lucy Ann married Asbury Houdashelt.  They lived near Walnut, Kansas.  Lucy Ann gave birth to nine children despite dying at age 31.
  • David Henry married Amelia Ann Hines.  They raised their family near Hepler, Kansas.
  • Joseph Andrew married Emma (May) Johnson in Farlington, Kansas.  They raised their sons in Western Kansas.
  • Rosa Isabel
  • Samuel Edgar married Ellen, a woman several years his senior.  They lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Sam worked in a garage.
  • Unknown female that died young
