Maria Katherina Elizabeth “Mary” Herzberger, was born in Germany in 1838.

Immigration

Mary traveled to America on the ship Cedar with no other Herzbergers listed on the ship’s passenger list.  She arrived in New York in June 1861 and listed her occupation as Gentleman’s servant.  She was listed in the record next to several other young women with the same occupation.

Mary is the only Herzberger that has been verified by my research.  Other researchers believe Mary to be the daughter of Conrad Herzberger and Cathrina Anna Schwalb.  Their information is included in the reports and family web cards.  However, be aware that information has not been confirmed.

Marriage

She married Johann (Phillip) Helm, who was 14 years her senior, in Hollowayville, Illinois less than a month after her arrival in the United States. What brought Mary to that area is unknown.

The children of Phillip and Mary include:

  • Johann (Phillip) / Phillip John [m: Elizabeth “Lizzie” Miller]
  • Heinrich “Henry” [m: Anna Johanna Peters]
  • Wilhelmena/Wilhemine “Minnie” [m: Otto Fiedler]
  • Angeline/Anna Maria “Mary” [m: Christen Earnest Buess]
  • Johann (Frederick) [m: Engelina “Lena” Renken]
  • Philibena “Bena”
  • Nicolaus
  • Katherine “Kate” Wilhelmena [m: Jacob Bantz]
  • Philipp (Jacob) [m: Minnie Louisa Carolina Kutzner]
  • Maria Elizabeth “Lizzie” [m: Johann “John” Phillip Meinen]
  • Caroline Anna “Carrie” [m: John (Frederich) Linhardt]
  • Wilhelm
  • Unnamed

Death

Mary outlived Philipp and five of her thirteen children.  At the time of her death, Mary had 62 grandchildren, three of whom she helped raise, and 36 great grandchildren.
