Hurry

Margaret

1750 – 1835

Margaret Hurry, daughter of William and Mary Hurrie/Hurry, was likely born in Philadelphia.

Marriage

Margaret married John McGinley at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia.

Their children included:

  • Mary McGinley married Isaac Davis. Her tie to the family is defined through Samuel’s will which includes his sister Mary Davis and her son Benjamin Franklin Davis as heirs.

  • Martha McGinley married Titus Owens. Titus and daughter Margaret, who died as a young child, are buried at Old Pine Cemetery and are listed on the same stone as William Hurrie. Their other daughter Maria (named in Samuel McGinley’s will) married Mordecai Lyons in 1841. Mordecai came from a Jewish family. He served in the War of 1812 and later worked in stationery and made quills. He died in 1845. After Mordecai’s death, Maria returned to teaching piano and accordion, which she had taught prior to her marriage, at a location near the intersection of Lombard and Front Street. Later she moved to live with/near Mordecai’s family. Towards the end of her long life she lived in a Presbyterian home for widows and single women.

  • William McGinley

  • Christiana McGinley married Samuel Meeker.

  • Samuel McGinley got his seaman certificate in 1812. His plans when he got that certificate are not clear; however, he ended up living most of his adult life in Charleston, South Carolina, where he married Jerusha McCann, a widow, in 1814. Samuel was a grow dealer (assuming he dealt in tobacco), owned slaves, and owned a number of properties. Some of the money came from his wife, who appeared to have more money that he did. Samuel died in 1857 of stomach cancer. His wife had died before him and he appeared to have no children. His will provided for widowed members of the family and for an orphanage in Charleston.

  • Ann McGinley married Christian Stetler. Christian and Ann lived in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. They gave birth to nine children. Ann developed breast cancer and sought help in Philadelphia. She joined Old Pine Street Church and is identified as a sister to Mrs. Meeker. Ann died at age 35. Christian died a mere three years later.

Their Location

In 1790, John and Margaret lived at 506 Front Street, which is between Lombard St and South St.  Today that location faces a greenbelt and I-95.  The census records two males under the age of 16, which would most likely have been their sons Samuel and William.  There were four females listed in the household.

John’s Death

When John died in 1804, he gave all his property to Margaret including his property in Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).  The exact location of this property and how he came to own it remains to be discovered.  However, it may have been compensation for his war effort and monies he personally paid to the men in his company.

Margaret’s Death

Margaret died in Philadelphia during July 1835.
