William Johnson Jr. was born in North Carolina and moved with his parents to Wayne County, Indiana.

Marriage & Children

In 1824, he married Rachel Smith, whose family had also moved from North Carolina to Indiana.

Rachel died in 1839 and William only two years later.  Records from a family reunion years later state that William and Rachel were the parents to eight children. However, it is not known what happened to all of the children or even if they all survived.

The known children include:

  • Eleazer “Ail” was the oldest son. According to a note on the back of the photo shown, Eleazer served in the Civil War.  It wasn’t until he was about 50 years old that he married. Eleazer and his wife Elizabeth Bennett lived in Iowa and had no offspring.
  • Martha
  • Lydia was ten years younger than Martha.  Lydia was raised by William’s sister Anne (Johnson) Lykens.  At one point, Anne’s daughter Sarah wrote to Lydia and indicated that she had locks of hair from Lydia’s mother and from her sister Martha. Lydia married twice. First, she married Joshua Fletcher Harris.  He died three years into their marriage. They had no children.  Next, she married Joshua’s brother James Austin Harris, whose first wife had previously died.  They had no children.  However, James’ son Wilson lived with them during his teen years.  They also helped raise a young girl who is not known to have been related to them.   She lived with her second husband in Iowa.
