Willis Alexander Conner, son of Thomas and Martha (Whitworth) Conner, was born in 1848 in Macoupin County, Illinois.

 

Marriage

In 1871, Willis married Mary Isabella Portwood, daughter of Woodson Portwood  and Martha Galey McCammon. Willis and Mary had seven children, which were born and raised in Bourbon County, Kansas. Their children were as follows:

  • Lydia May married Harvey Underwood, raised five children, and remained in Bourbon County her entire life.
  • Donald Willis married Icy May Turner and Ruby Geraldine Ball and raised eight children.
  • John(Frank) married Anna Wilcher. He was secretary and treasure of Garland and Western Telephone Company.
  • Millicent “Millie” F. married John H. Jamison and had at least five children.
  • Della
  • Dudley David married Mary Nilsson.  He was a veterinarian.  At the end of his life, he was living in Texarkana, Texas.
  • Thomas

 

Military Service

Willis served at least three tours of duty, serving in the Civil War and the Kansas Calvary.  Later he was involved with the organization The Grand Army of the Republic. Read more . . .

 

When not serving the country, Willis farmed the land.  He died at the Old Soldier’s Home in Dodge City, Kansas.
