Thomas Gallatin Conner  was born in 1809  in Kentucky. 

 

Marriage

In 1836, Thomas married Martha Whitworth, who was seven years his junior, in Macoupin County, Illinois. The next year, Thomas purchased approximately 43 acres for $1.25 per acre. Additional land purchases followed.  However, by the time Nancy was born, they were living in Missouri.  Later, they were back in Macoupin County, Illinois.  However, by 1869, the family had moved to Drywood Township, Bourbon Co, Kansas.

 

The Children

Thomas and Martha are believed to have had eleven children:

  • Thomas died as an infant.
  • Hillard F. died as an infant.
  • Nancy (Elizabeth) may have married Richard Thornton.
  • Sarah V.
  • Julia S.
  • Benjamin F. served in the Civil War.
  • Eliza Jane married George Thornton, who served in the Civil War.  They lived near Liberal, Missouri.
  • Willis Alexander
  • Emily A. “Emma” married Hugh Portwood, but only lived to age 26.
  • Margaret Marcella “Maggie” married Hugh Portwood a year after her sister (who was married to him) died.  They lived in Bourbon County, Kansas.
  • John Warren married Mary Elizabeth Johnson in 1883 in Arkansas. The family later lived in Texas.
