Thorn(e)
Elizabeth
1724 – ?
♦Verified
In this situation, the verification comes from having a primary source that shows that Abraham and Elizabeth had a daughter Patience. Secondary sources record the daughter Patience as the same one that married John Bunting, Jr. In addition, there is significant circumstantial evidence.
Elizabeth Thorn(e), daughter of Joseph and Sarah Foulke(s) Thorn(e), was born in 1724 in Crosswicks, Burlington County, New Jersey.
Marriage
Elizabeth married Abraham Tilton in 1748 and the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting in Burlington County, New Jersey. They had five children, none of which were adults, at the time of Abraham’s passing.
Second Marriage
Soon after Abraham died, Elizabeth remarried via license (i.e. not in the Quaker Church) to Humphrey Wall. This displeased the Society of Friends and they disowned her from their society for marrying contrary to the Discipline. However, they stated that they were open to her returning if she gave them proper satisfaction and that she would be informed that she had a right to appeal. Elizabeth, however, declined to appeal the Society of Friend’s decision and apparently had no interest in taking steps to satisfy their concerns.
Elizabeth died in 1764, having given her second husband a son.
