Some researchers believe this family is tied to a Phillips family whose ancestry is known back for many generations.
John Phillips is believe to be the father of our John family line. It was a time of transition of naming conventions and his name using the old naming convention would have been John ap (of) Phillip. Since the names were changing, it is believed that John and his wife Elinor’s children (Samuel, John Robert, Sarah, Thomas, and possibly a son Daniel) used the name Phillips.
A Changing Name
However, when Griffith and Samuel came to America, they took their father’s given name as their surname. Hence, the John Family was born.
