Alfred Wood Crawford was born in 1802 in Old Pound Ridge, Saratoga, New York  to Archibald and Mary (Wood) Crawford.

The Move West

Alfred was one of the children of Archibald and Mary  that ventured westward.  Alfred married Lydia Andrus possibly  in Vermont or Holmes County, Ohio, where they settled.  They were parents to eleven children:

  • Almira married Frederick Russell and Emery Hanna.
  • Sally died at age 12.
  • Ezra married Mary Harrison.
  • Seneca Allen marrried Elizabeth Kirkendall.
  • Aseneth Ecrieth
  • Alfred Wood married Sarah J. Biggs and Alma Susannah Crawford, who was a cousin.
  • Susannah married Samuel Harrison. They moved to Oklahoma.
  • Lydia Purthena married Robert Simpson Claney.  This family moved to Kansas, but not to the same location as the Pellett family.  It is assumed that Robert or someone in his family was the inspiration for using the Claney name in the Pellett family.
  • Cyrus married Mary Jane Kerr.  Cyrus moved his family to Iowa.
  • A child that died shortly after birth.

Alfred died when his youngest child was only 4 years old.
