John Tilton Jr. was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1640.  In the coming years, he moved with his family to Gravesend, Long Island, New York.

Marriage

John married Mary Coates in 1670 at Oyster Bay, New York.  Four years later, he married Rebecca Terry at Flushing, Long Island, New York.

  • Daniel married Elizabeth Powell.
  • Thomas married Faith Lawrence.

Property

John Jr. owned property in the West Meadow of Gravesend.  When his father died, he inherited his father’s house and a portion of his property (which was divided between all of John Sr.’s children). In addition, John Jr., along with his father, bought property in New Jersey as a part of the Monmouth Patent in 1664.

In 1683, John Jr. sold a plantation in Gravesend, New York.  Then in 1691/1692 he sold out all his remaining property in Gravesend for £295 with the understanding that he had 12 months to move.  It was during this year that he finally made the move to Monmouth County, New Jersey.

Interesting Inheritance

At one point, a man in England gave an inheritance to John Jr. and his brother Peter with Peter getting a majority of the money.  It remains to be investigated if this man was a relative, a friend of John Sr., or perhaps had been in the Colonies and returned to England.

Remaining Years

John lived out his remaining years in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
